Any modern aircraft is the product of a complex engineering process in which each piece or system has an important place, and where the landing gear plays an essential role. Let us not lose sight of the fact that it is the single point of contact between the aircraft and the ground, and it affects manoeuvres as important as taxiing, take-off and landing.

In fact, it is a system that covers three core missions: supporting the aircraft, enabling movement on the ground (steering and braking), and cushioning the impact on landing (absorption of the shock energy).

The landing gear can be of different types or configurations depending on its geometry, the layout of the wheels, their articulation, the type of suspension and the type of surface over which the aircraft must move.

There are a multitude of variants to suit every need, from small planes in which the landing gear consists of three wheels with a V layout (tricycle), all the way to the huge Antonov An-225, with gear that consists of 32 wheels (28 in the main landing gear and 4 in the front).

In this infographic we explain the main characteristics of landing gear, the different types, how they work and some curious details that will certainly be of interest to you. We hope you enjoy it.
