Without doubt the use of this type of aircraft has been historically linked to the military. In fact, the different wars over the years have been the main driving factor behind their development. Also the fact that armed conflicts have, in recent years, become more and more televised, and transmitted to millions of viewers around the world, has meant that these new terms such as drones, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) and RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) have become widely accepted and understood.
On the other hand, we have also been part of a new worldwide mini-revolution over the last few years: the use of civil drones. Their use has been universalised due to the development of small drones that have allowed almost any citizen access to this type of equipment at a very reasonable price.
As expected, access to this type of technology has sparked ingenuity and inventiveness across the globe with numerous people and companies alike all creating ways to use it. In reality this was, in essence, the universalization of drones.
However it is very possible that the vast majority of people who remotely pilot their small unmanned aerial vehicle are unaware that this type of vehicle was first used in the middle of the 19th century.
With this in mind, we have developed an infographic that links the main milestones in the history of the development of unmanned aerial vehicles. Please feel free to download and share it. Enjoy!
