One of the aspects which exerts the greatest influence on the way an airport is managed is its ownership. If we were to analyse any of the airports we know, we would see that its management is clearly conditioned by whether it is publicly or privately owned. ACI Europe published a report in spring 2016 which analysed 500 European airports, precisely focusing on this issue. The report was entitled “The Ownership of Europe’s Airports 2016”.
ACI Europe drew up this study by surveying 500 airports in 45 European countries, including both European Union countries and countries outside the EU. A similar study had already been carried out in 2010. Hence, it also served to establish trends.
Several interesting pieces of data can be extracted from this document. It should be pointed out that 40% of European airports have private partners. Generally speaking, these airports carry the highest traffic volumes. This leads to the conclusion that three out of four passengers who fly in Europe do so using an airport having private capital shareholdings. Likewise, 80% of publicly owned airports are structured and function like private companies.
It reveals that the most suitable solution in many cases is a public-private partnership. The public partner ensures that the community’s long-term interests are secured. The private investor ensures that airport operations are performed efficiently and that no public funds are wasted on the building of unnecessary infrastructures.
We invite you to download and share this infographic showing many very interesting aspects about the ownership of the European airports.
