The commercial space race

Since the middle of the last century, we have witnessed the exciting development of the conquest of space. Initially it was the great world powers, the United States and the former Soviet Union, who capitalised on the space adventure. They had a clear objective: to show the world their scientific, technological and military supremacy.

Decades later, other countries entered the field. Sometimes it was the space agencies The ESA (European Space Agency), for example, was a conglomerate of countries that took on huge budgets for this purpose. Subsequently, major aeronautical corporations joined the space race, albeit almost always dependent on their contracting out of state budgets.

However, at the beginning of the 21st century the rules of the game have changed dramatically. Technology has advanced significantly and has reduced its costs. There are more people with new ideas, there are more companies directly or indirectly involved in aerospace and, above all, there are more companies involved in aerospace than ever before. entrepreneurs who have the necessary financing and the decisive courage to address initiatives in space.

Almost all of them have names that ring a bell: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Richard Btanson, López Urdiales, Larry page, Sergei Brin, Greg Wyler, Chris Lewicki, Robert Bigelow... They are the space pioneers of the 21st century.

Behind them are projects for sub-orbital launches, others aimed at mining asteroids, as well as several large communications satellite network projects. There are many more, but these are an outstanding example of the change for the better that has taken place in the space race. And, make no mistake, we have only just begun.

In this infographics we take a look at some of these private initiatives to conquer space.
