To be a good engineer, it is necessary to have a deep knowledge of mathematics, physics and computer science. However, these are only basic skills, such as reading and writing. Human Resources does not bother to ask about them. It is taken for granted that engineers have mastered them. HR is looking for something more.
What really turns an engineer into a superhero is the emotional intelligence.
A good engineering professional should have more competences:
- Communication skills
- Team working skills
- Interest in learning
- Integrity
Communication skills
Communication skills mean much more than having a way with words. It means writing clear communications that get results. It means being able to condense results into a few words for a presentation. It means practising active listening (the forgotten skill) in order to understand before acting. And finally, in order to have communication skills, it is essential to have a perfect command of a foreign language: English if possible. Fluency in two or more languages is essential in the 21st century global engineering market. (1).
Team working skills
Engineering is a collaborative effort. A self-centred, individualistic, egomaniacal person will not do well. Engineering companies need team players. Team players support the decisions of the group. They value (and pursue) the opinions of others. They treat others with objectivity, politeness and respect. They help others and encourage their opinions. Team players are committed to the group's ultimate goal and follow through on that commitment.
Interest in learning
We live in a world of rapid and constant change. Every day, new products and ideas are emerging everywhere. Being committed to continuous improvement and learning is the only way not to be left behind. A good engineer is continually testing new methods, applying new technologies and learning new skills. There are three ways to acquire new ideas: going back to school, attending seminars or reading at home. A good engineer has an open mind.
Integrity
For a good engineer, safety, health and welfare are paramount. Full compliance with engineering codes is non-negotiable. In professional matters, good engineers act with honesty and loyalty in their dealings with employees, clients and society. In addition, they adopt a zero-tolerance policy for bribery, fraud and corruption.
Of course, there are many other skills and knowledge that can be useful: knowledge of cultural differences, business economics, project management, leadership, critical thinking, flexibility, the ability to reflect from multiple parameters... and much more.
All this well blended together makes a good engineer. That's what engineering companies are looking for. But what really makes an engineer into a superhero is the emotional intelligence. If you know of an engineer with this kind of intelligence, please contact the Natural Science Museum immediately.

(1) And for those whose mother tongue is English, do not think that you can get away with not having to master a foreign language. For example, if you speak only English, it will be practically impossible to sell consultancy services in Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America.
