Consultancy / Master plan

The new master plan for Brussels South Charleroi Airport started with a short-, medium- and long-term traffic forecast study.

Based on these traffic forecasts, after assessing the state of the current infrastructure, AERTEC Solutions analysed and studied the various options for expanding the airport's entire infrastructure over the same time periods: the short, medium and long term.

The master plan examined a number of options for expanding the main terminal, as it was deemed to be operating at overcapacity. One of these options was finally chosen for development, as part of the detailed design for the terminal expansion contract.

Finally, AERTEC prepared the tender documents for the construction of the terminal building expansion.

Planning and design / Terminal building expansion

The Charleroi Airport terminal building expansion project is one of the key activities included in the airport's new Master Plan, which was drawn up by AERTEC in 2012.

The key elements behind the design of the building are based on the three following criteria:

  • To ensure continuity between the volumes of space in the expansion area and the existing terminal.
  • To optimise processes within the building, either by refurbishing existing areas or designing new areas in suitable locations.
  • To provide natural lighting to the spaces where the main processes are carried out.

In addition to these essential constraints, other criteria such as operational flexibility and future expandability were also factored into the design process.

Planning and design / Charleroi Airport air traffic control tower

SOWAER commissioned AERTEC to carry out the preliminary and basic design, the construction design and onsite supervision during construction for the new air traffic control (ATC) tower at Charleroi Airport.

AERTEC also performed an in-depth study to determine the location of the tower, in which over ten possible sites were analysed based on criteria such as visibility (line of sight, obstacles to visibility, etc.), aeronautical easements (OLS), building restricted areas (BRAs), navigational aids and protection of approach/departure procedures, etc.

The design process met Belgocontrol's strict performance requirements. The end result was a 35 m tower with a 95 m2 control tower cab, space for 5 air traffic controllers and a total surface area of 1700 m2 for the entire building.
