Innovation in aerospace and defence systems

In the field of aerospace and defence systems, we innovate in three areas of knowledge: the development of new solutions in the areas of the guidance, communications and remotely piloted aircraft systems’ architecture; the MEA (More Electric Aircraft) concept’s evolution, which is geared at greatly improving aircraft efficiency; and advanced defence systems.

RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System)

ECORPAS Project Area of innovation: Aerial platforms
This project is led by AERTEC Solutions with the participation of CESA and SKYLIFE as partners.ECORPAS aims to develop a remotely piloted aircraft weighing less than 25 kg with extended flight autonomy for environmental monitoring. This involves three technology challenges:
  • The development of a power system based on PEM fuel cell technology which allows onboard energy to be increased.
  • The development of an integrated control system (for energy and the aircraft) which adapts trajectories in real time to optimise energy consumption.
  • The design and development of an especially conceived aircraft to increase its autonomy, which is in turn be capable of integrating the mission system needed for environmental monitoring tasks.
The project’s file number is ITC-20151197 and it has been co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the “Smart Growth Operating Programme 2014-2020” and the Ministry of the Economy and Competitiveness through the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) under the ERDF INNTERCONECTA 2015 call.
Atlantida Project (CDTI / 2007-2010)

Area of innovation: Guidance, navigation and control

Led by Boeing R&T, AERTEC Solutions took part in the design and development of a UAS flight management system (FMS) and a functional testing management graphic interface for an aerial platform test bench.

Sintonia Project (CDTI / 2009-2012)

Area of innovation: Guidance, navigation and control

This initiative was led by Boeing R&T. AERTEC Solutions took part in the development of a UAS control and guidance system aimed at reducing energy consumption which at the same time offers robustness in the event of turbulence.

MEA (More Electric Aircraft)

TEMGIR Project / Clean Sky I (SGO-04-006) Area of innovation: Validation systems for new architectures and efficient algorithms
TEMGIR offers an aircraft thermal model which shows electrical and thermal behaviours. It is able to develop any kind of relevant case study and scenario during the different flight phases. TEMGIR provides a thermal response depending on the power source and is managed and supervised by the control and supervision software system. TEMGIR software allows for equipment load profiles and flight scenarios which provide a simulation of the different behaviours during flight phases, including aircraft locations and special situations.
The research which has led to these outcomes was funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) for the Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative under Grant Agreement No. [641463]. 
Power Test Bench Project / Clean Sky I (SGO-02-024) Area of innovation: Validation systems for new architectures and efficient algorithms / Onboard systems
The PTB project provides a real-time control system which includes high-power management (1200 VDC, 600 A) and an intuitive human-machine interface (HMI) which is capable of emulating environmental scenarios and monitoring parameters like pressure, temperature, vibrations, etc. related to real in-flight operating conditions in order to validate the behaviour of the avionics components integrated into different onboard systems. The project was led by THALES Avionics Electrical Systems.

Advanced defence systems

MINEA 2 Project (2010-2012) Area of innovation: Guidance, navigation and control
AERTEC Solutions designed a system in conjunction with SAES and EXPAL that makes it possible to launch a mine from an aeroplane hold (C-295) without interfering with the mine’s design and leaving intact its ability to be also launched from a surface ship or submarine.
Greta Project (2010-2012)
Area of innovation: Terminal guidance systems

AERTEC Solutions in conjunction with EXPAL carried out the design, HW & SW development and implementation of an electro-optical terminal guidance system based on the recognition of a laser designator which singles out the target from the ground.
