An airport climate portal

There is no doubt that one of the factors that can worry us most while waiting at an airport is the weather we will find at our destination. It is when we ask the typical questions about whether we have chosen the right clothing to carry in our luggage or whether, on the contrary, we will feel cold or hot.

Just a few days ago, Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, Sweden decided to relieve passengers from these troublesome questions. In order to do so, some «climate cabins» were installed where passengers can enter and actually feel the climate of the city they are travelling to.

climate-portal-02As a matter of fact, there are three cabins which have been called «The Climate Portal». Once inside, passengers can select the city to which they are flying. The cabins’ computer then connects to an online weather service and obtains the main parameters of that city’s weather in real time. Subsequently, the same sensation of temperature, humidity and air which the passenger will find upon stepping off the aeroplane are reproduced inside the cabin.

The most immediate consequence is the satisfaction passengers feel when they see they have chosen their luggage properly. Others, however, will realise that they have made a mistake with the clothing they have chosen to take. Two options are available to the latter kind of passengers: either regretting it ruefully for the rest of the trip or, alternatively, going to one of the airport shops to put such an inconvenient situation right.

climate-portal-04Airports are undoubtedly making increasing, more specialised use of the alternatives offered to them by technology. Some solutions may seem rather atypical or quirky, like this particular case. However, there are surely a large number of people who would view initiatives like Arlanda’s Climate Portal positively, allowing them to have a more relaxed flight knowing full well that they are carrying what they have to carry in their luggage.
